Ambient temperature

Altitude and cooling
Altitude affects motors because thinner air at height cools less effectively. A motor relying on air to carry away its heat finds that air less able to do so as altitude increases, again reducing the load it can handle without overheating. Installations at significant elevation must account for this reduced cooling, either by derating the motor or by ensuring adequate cooling by other means.
Humidity, dust, and contamination
The cleanliness and moisture of the environment matter too. Dust accumulating on a motor insulates it, trapping heat and raising its temperature, while dust drawn inside can cause problems directly. Humidity and moisture invite corrosion and can degrade insulation, particularly if a motor stands idle and cold in damp conditions. Corrosive or contaminated atmospheres demand motors sealed and protected to suit, or they fail prematurely.
Matching motor to environment
The practical lesson is that a motor must be chosen and applied with its environment in mind. A motor perfectly suited on paper may underperform or fail early if the ambient conditions are harsher than assumed. Selecting a motor with appropriate ratings and protection for its actual location, and keeping it clean and cool, allows it to deliver its full performance and life.
